GOD ON A MISSION: LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Living as Light in the Darkness

Introduction: Embracing God’s Mission

In Acts 1:8, Jesus commissions His followers:"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

God’s mission is clear—to bring His light into a dark world, spreading His truth to every corner of the earth. But how do we live out this calling in our daily lives?

The Power of the Light

Light holds immense power. John 1:5 reminds us, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot comprehend it."

In a spiritual sense, light represents life, truth, and hope. It cuts through darkness, guiding those who feel lost. Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life”(John 8:12). As believers, we are also called to be light. Jesus says in Matthew 5:14-16:"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Evangelism in Action and Character

Sharing God’s love isn’t confined to preaching; it’s also seen in how we live. Galatians 5:22-23 outlines the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, kindness, and self-control. These traits reveal God’s character through our actions.

Evangelism can happen:

  1. Actively—Engaging in conversations about the Gospel.

  2. Passively—Letting our behavior reflect Christ’s teachings.

When we walk in step with the Spirit, our lives become a testimony that draws others closer to God.

Overcoming Barriers to Faith

Sadly, actions inconsistent with God’s Word can create doubt about the authenticity of our faith. Galatians 5:19-21 warns against the acts of the flesh—anger, jealousy, and pride—which undermine our witness. Instead, we are called to live humbly (James 4:6) and obediently (John 3:36).

Living with Purpose

Ephesians 2:8-10 reminds us:"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works."

Your life is part of God’s grand mission. As you live in the Spirit and let your light shine, you fulfill the good deeds He has prepared for you.

What now?

Every believer is part of God’s mission to be a light in the darkness. Let your life reflect His glory, so others may see the transformative power of His love. Choose to walk by the Spirit today and invite others to experience the eternal hope we have in Christ.

Let’s go forth as light-bearers, glorifying God through every action and word!
