GOD ON A MISSION: THE RETURN OF SONS AND DAUGHTERS.

Have you ever felt like the prodigal son—far from home, weary, and wondering if there’s a way back? The story from Luke 15:11-24 beautifully illustrates the heart of our Heavenly Father, who longs for His children to return to Him.

A Father’s Compassion

When the prodigal son came to his senses, he decided to return home, unsure of what reception he would receive. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and ran to meet him, filled with compassion. This profound image reminds us that God’s forgiveness doesn’t begin when we ask—it has always been there, waiting for us to return.

As 2 Peter 3:9 tells us, “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise... He is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” From the moment Adam and Eve sinned, God set His mission in motion: to bring His children back to Him.

Heaven Rejoices

Each return is celebrated in heaven. Luke 15:4-10 illustrates this joy through the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin. Jesus emphasized that there is rejoicing in heaven over every sinner who repents. This underscores the value God places on every soul—yours included.

Ways to Return

We see in Scripture that the path back to God takes different forms:

  1. Coming to Ourselves: Like the prodigal son, some of us realize our need for God in moments of clarity (Luke 15:17-18).

  2. Being Pointed in the Right Direction: Peter’s words in Acts 2:37-41 convicted thousands, leading them to repentance and baptism.

  3. Receiving Guidance: The Ethiopian eunuch needed Philip to explain the Scriptures (Acts 8:26-37).

  4. Being Brought to Him: Paul and Silas shared the gospel with a prison guard, leading him and his household to salvation (Acts 16:27-34).

In all these examples, there was someone—Peter, Philip, Paul, or Silas—ready to participate in God’s mission. Today, that someone is you and me.

Our Mission Field

As believers, we are called to join God’s mission field. Every interaction is an opportunity to guide someone toward Christ. The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 reminds us of our role: to make disciples, baptize them, and teach them to obey God’s commands.

How Can We Be Ready?

  1. Be Alert: Watch for opportunities in everyday conversations.

  2. Be Equipped: Know the Word of God and its application.

  3. Depend on the Holy Spirit: He provides wisdom, courage, and the right words.

Now What?

God’s mission to bring His children back is ongoing, and He has chosen us to carry it forward. Whether by a conversation, an act of kindness, or simply sharing our testimony, we are the vessels of His love.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unrelenting love and patience. Help us to be Your hands and feet, reaching out to those who are lost. May we always be ready and equipped for Your mission, trusting that You are with us every step of the way. Amen.
